The kit typically includes a replacement game board (the main PCB that runs the game software), a wiring harness adapter if needed, new EPROM chips or a flash memory card containing the game library, and sometimes an updated touchscreen interface or button overlay for game selection.

Think of it like upgrading the operating system on a computer. The cabinet, power supply, display, buttons, and coin handling all stay the same. You are just swapping out the brain that determines what games are available.

The concept is not new. IGT's own Game King platform was designed from the ground up as a multi-game system. What conversion kits do is bring that multi-game capability to platforms that were originally designed for single-game operation.

Compatible Platforms: Which Machines Can Be Converted?

Not every slot machine is a good candidate for conversion. The feasibility depends on the platform architecture, display type, and button layout. Here are the major platforms that support conversion kits.

IGT Game King

The IGT Game King is already a multi-game platform, so conversion here means expanding the game library rather than adding multi-game capability from scratch. A base Game King might ship with 31 poker games. Conversion kits can expand that to 50, 70, or even 100+ games including both poker variants and slot titles.

The Game King uses a modular software architecture that makes game library expansion straightforward. You swap the game chip set — replacing the existing EPROMs with chips containing the expanded library — and the machine recognizes the new games on its next boot cycle. No wiring changes, no display modifications, no button alterations.

This is the easiest and most reliable conversion available. If you already own a Game King and want more games, this is a no-brainer upgrade.

IGT S2000 Platform

The IGT S2000 is America's most popular home slot machine, and for good reason. It is also one of the more limited platforms for conversion because it was designed as a mechanical reel machine. The physical reels can only display specific symbol combinations, which limits what games the machine can run.

That said, S2000 conversions do exist. They work by changing the game chip and reel strips simultaneously. You get a different game — Triple Diamond instead of Double Diamond, for example — but you are still limited to one game at a time. True multi-game conversion on a mechanical reel machine is not practical because you would need to physically swap reel strips for each game.

However, if your S2000 has a video display (some later models did), multi-game kits become viable. Video-based S2000 variants can run multi-game software similar to the Game King platform.

Bally Game Maker

The Bally Game Maker was Bally's answer to the IGT Game King — a purpose-built multi-game platform. Like the Game King, expanding its library is a chip-swap operation. Base configurations typically include 10 to 20 games, and conversion kits can push that to 50 or more titles.

Bally Game Maker kits are less commonly available than IGT kits due to Bally's smaller installed base, but they do exist. The games tend to focus on video slots and video poker, with some keno and blackjack variants mixed in.

WMS Bluebird

The WMS Bluebird platform is a video-based system that can theoretically run multiple game titles. Conversion kits for the Bluebird are available but less standardized than IGT offerings. The Bluebird uses a PC-based architecture (essentially a computer running proprietary gaming software), which makes game loading more of a software installation than a chip swap.

Bluebird conversions can add 20 to 40 games depending on the kit. The games are primarily WMS video slot titles with bonus features — think Wizard of Oz, Monopoly, and similar theme-heavy games with second-screen bonuses.

Bally Alpha Series

The Bally Alpha platform uses a similar PC-based architecture to the Bluebird. Multi-game kits exist for the Alpha series, though availability varies. These kits can load 30 to 60 Bally video slot titles onto a single machine.

The Alpha's large screen and advanced graphics make it an excellent multi-game platform. Games look fantastic on the high-resolution display, and the machine's hardware has no trouble running any title in the Bally library from that era.

50-Game Kits ($300-$450)

These are the entry-level multi-game kits. They typically include a mix of video poker variants (Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild, Double Bonus, etc.) and basic video slot games. On an IGT Game King platform, a 50-game kit gives you an excellent variety of poker and slots without overwhelming the selection menu.

100-Game Kits ($450-$600)

The sweet spot for most home users. A 100-game kit adds more exotic poker variants, additional slot themes, and usually some specialty games like keno or multi-hand poker. You get enough variety that you will never feel limited, without so many options that the menu becomes unwieldy.

200+ Game Kits ($600-$800)

The maximum-variety option. These mega-kits pack everything available for the platform into one package. You get every poker variant, every slot theme, specialty games, and sometimes regional game styles. The sheer number means some games will rarely get played, but if you like having options, this is the way to go.

DIY Installation vs. Buying Pre-Loaded

You have two paths to multi-game capability: install a kit yourself, or buy a machine that already has a multi-game configuration installed.

DIY Kit Installation

Installing a conversion kit yourself is doable if you are comfortable opening up the machine and handling circuit boards. The process varies by platform but generally involves these steps.

Power down the machine completely and unplug it. Open the main door and locate the game board — it is usually mounted inside the upper cabinet area. Remove the existing game chips (EPROMs) from their sockets, noting orientation. Install the new chips from the kit in the same sockets, matching orientation marks. Close up, power on, and follow any initialization procedure included with the kit.

On IGT Game King machines, this is straightforward — a 20-minute job for someone who has done it before. On PC-based platforms like the Bluebird or Alpha, it may involve connecting a USB drive and running a software installation, which takes longer but is not technically difficult.

The risk with DIY installation is static damage to the chips during handling and incorrect chip orientation. Both can render the board non-functional until corrected. Using an anti-static wrist strap and double-checking orientation before powering on eliminates most risk.

Buying Pre-Loaded

Legal Considerations

Here is something many sellers will not tell you about conversion kits: there is a legal gray area.

In a regulated casino environment, every game chip must be approved by the state gaming commission. The software goes through rigorous testing and certification. Conversion kits for home use do not go through this process because home machines are not regulated the same way.

For personal home entertainment, this is not an issue. You are not operating a commercial gambling device. The games are for your enjoyment in your own home. No gaming commission is going to audit your basement.

However, if you ever plan to use the machine in a commercial setting — even a charity event or a bar — the uncertified game software could create legal exposure. Stick to certified, factory-original configurations for any commercial use.

The state-by-state legality of owning the machine itself is a separate question from what software runs on it. As long as the machine is legal to own in your state, the game software you run on it for personal use is your business.
