A dealer's guide to sourcing slot machine replacement parts, typical costs, when to DIY, and what your warranty covers.

Slot machines are mechanical and electronic devices with moving parts, and moving parts eventually wear out. After 33 years in this business, I can tell you exactly which parts fail, how often, what they cost, and where to find them. Most repairs are straightforward enough for a motivated home owner. Some are not. Here is the complete guide.

Parts That Wear Out (In Order of Frequency)

The bill acceptor is the number one service item on any slot machine. It is a precision optical and mechanical device that must identify, validate, and stack paper currency at speed. The rollers get dirty, the optical sensors get dusty, and the stacking mechanism can jam.

Most machines use one of two brands: JCM (models iVizion, WBA, or older DBV series) or MEI (now CPI, models SC66, SC83, or APEX series). Both are excellent products that last for years with basic maintenance.

Common failures: Bill rejection (machine will not accept bills), stacking jams (bill gets stuck inside), communication errors (acceptor loses connection to the logic board).

Maintenanceschedule: Clean the optical path with a cleaning card every 1-3 months depending on usage. Blow dust out with compressed air. Check the rollers for debris.

Replacement cost: A new JCM iVizion runs $300-500. A refurbished unit costs $150-250. MEI/CPI units are similar. Older models (JCM DBV-200, MEI SC66) can be found for $75-150 refurbished.

CMOS Batteries

Every slot machine has a small lithium battery (usually CR2032 or 1/2 AA) on the logic board that maintains memory when the machine is powered off. These batteries last 3-7 years and then die without warning. When they fail, the machine loses its settings, game configuration, and audit data on every power cycle.

Symptoms: Machine powers on with error codes about memory or NVRAM. Machine asks for setup configuration every time you turn it on. Machine will not boot past the initial screen.

Replacement cost: The battery itself is $2-5 at any electronics store or online. It is a 10-minute replacement once you know which battery your board uses and where it is located.

This is the single most common call we get on our tech support line. We walk people through it multiple times per week. It is always an easy fix.

Power Supplies

Slot machine power supplies convert household AC power (120V) to the various DC voltages the machine needs (typically +5V, +12V, +24V, and sometimes +48V). They run hot, and heat kills capacitors over time. A failing power supply causes random shutdowns, display flickering, boot failures, or complete failure to power on.

Most machines use standard ATX-style or proprietary switching power supplies. IGT S2000 machines use a specific IGT power supply that is widely available. Bally machines often use Astec or similar branded supplies. Aristocrat uses standard form factor supplies that are easy to cross-reference.

Replacement cost: $50-150 for most models. IGT S2000 supplies are $60-80. A universal replacement for Bally or Aristocrat runs $80-120. Premium or hard-to-find models can hit $200.

Hopper Motors and Assemblies

If your machine pays out in coins (rather than printing tickets), it has a coin hopper with a motor that spins a disk to dispense coins. The motor runs hard every time the machine pays, and the coin-moving mechanism wears over time.

Symptoms: Machine will not pay out (hopper jam error), loud grinding noise during payout, intermittent payouts (starts then stops).

Hoppers come in different sizes (500 coin, 1000 coin, 2000 coin) and different coin diameters. Make sure you get the right one for your machine and denomination.

Replacement cost: Complete hopper assemblies run $75-200 depending on the manufacturer and size. Just the motor is $30-60. The coin disk (the part that actually contacts coins) is $20-40.

Note: Many home owners switch to a ticket printer instead of a hopper, eliminating this wear item entirely. A printer setup costs $200-350 but saves hassle long-term.

Reel Mechanisms (Mechanical Reel Machines Only)

On mechanical reel machines, each reel is driven by a stepper motor with an optical encoder that tells the machine exactly where the reel is positioned. The motors are reliable but the optical sensors can get dirty, and the reel strips (the paper or mylar band showing symbols) can fade or tear.

Symptoms: Reel stops in wrong position (tilt error), reel will not spin (motor failure), faded or torn symbols (cosmetic, not functional).

Replacement cost: Complete reel mechanism $100-200. Stepper motor alone $40-80. Reel strip (the symbol band) $15-30. Optical sensor board $30-60.

Buttons and Touch Screens

Buttons on a slot machine get pressed thousands of times. The spin button and max bet button take the most abuse. Eventually the microswitch inside fails or the button lamp burns out.

Most machines use standard IGT or Bally button assemblies with T3-1/4 wedge base lamps. The button housing lasts forever but the microswitch and lamp are consumables.

Replacement cost: Complete button assembly $10-25. Microswitch only $2-5. Button lamp $1-3. LED replacement lamps (never burn out) $3-8 each.

Touch screens can develop dead spots or lose calibration. Replacement touch screen panels cost $100-300 depending on size and type (resistive vs capacitive vs infrared).

Monitors and Displays

LCD panels and older CRT monitors degrade over time. LCDs develop backlight failure (dim or dark areas), dead pixels, or color shift. CRTs (found in older machines) lose brightness, develop geometry issues, or fail entirely.

Replacement cost: LCD panel replacement $150-400 depending on size. CRT monitors are increasingly hard to find; LCD conversion kits ($200-350) are usually the better option for older machines.

OEM vs. Aftermarket Parts

OEM parts are manufactured by or for the original machine manufacturer (IGT, Bally, Aristocrat, etc.). Aftermarket parts are made by third parties to fit the same machines.

When OEM Matters

Logic boards, game software, and proprietary electronics should always be OEM. These are precisely engineered for specific platforms and aftermarket alternatives either do not exist or are unreliable. A game cartridge must be genuine Aristocrat. An IGT processor board must be genuine IGT.

When Aftermarket Is Fine

Power supplies, lamps, batteries, generic switches, cooling fans, and similar commodity components work perfectly in aftermarket versions. A 12V cooling fan is a 12V cooling fan regardless of who made it. A CR2032 battery from Energizer works the same as one from any other brand.

Bill acceptors are a middle ground. OEM refurbished units are preferred, but aftermarket-rebuilt acceptors from reputable rebuilders work fine. Avoid cheap no-name imports.

IGT, Aristocrat, and Light and Wonder (Bally) all have parts departments that sell to licensed operators. Access can be difficult for home owners since manufacturers typically sell to licensed gaming businesses. However, some parts (particularly consumables like cleaning kits, lamps, and paper rolls) are available through their authorized distributors without licensing requirements.

Specialty Suppliers

Several companies specialize in used and refurbished slot machine parts. They buy machines for parts inventory and sell individual components. Names you will encounter include Slot Machines Unlimited, Slot Machine Parts Direct, and various eBay sellers who specialize in this niche.

Advantage: Wide selection, competitive pricing. Disadvantage: You need to know exactly what part number or specification you need. There is no tech support to help you diagnose the problem.

Online Marketplaces

eBay has a large selection of slot machine parts from various sellers. Prices range from excellent to absurd depending on the seller and how rare the part is. Quality ranges from tested-and-warrantied to pulled-from-a-junk-machine-no-returns.

Tips for buying parts on eBay: Buy from sellers with high feedback scores and slot-specific inventory (not general electronics sellers). Look for listings that say "tested working" or "refurbished." Avoid listings with stock photos instead of actual photos of the part. Check the return policy before buying.

When to DIY vs. Call a Tech

DIY-Friendly Repairs

These repairs require no special skills beyond basic mechanical ability and willingness to follow instructions:

  • Battery replacement (10 minutes, just swap a coin cell)
  • Button lamp replacement (5 minutes per button, unplug old lamp, plug in new one)
  • Bill acceptor cleaning (5 minutes, insert cleaning card, blow with compressed air)
  • Bill acceptor replacement (15 minutes, unplug old unit, plug in new unit, mount with two screws)
  • Power supply replacement (20 minutes, note wire positions, swap unit, reconnect)
  • Hopper replacement (15 minutes, disconnect, remove two bolts, reverse with new unit)
  • Reel strip replacement (30 minutes, requires patience but no special skills)

Call a Tech

These repairs require specialized knowledge, equipment, or software:

  • Logic board diagnosis and replacement (firmware matching, configuration)
  • Game software issues (requires manufacturer-specific knowledge)
  • Monitor/display replacement on older CRT machines (high voltage, dangerous)
  • Touch screen calibration that will not hold (often indicates controller failure)
  • Intermittent errors that do not produce clear error codes
  • Any repair involving the progressive controller or networked components

What Your Warranty Covers

Our standard one-year warranty covers all mechanical and electronic failures under normal home use. This includes:

  • Power supply failure
  • Logic board failure
  • Bill acceptor failure (not caused by foreign objects)
  • Display failure
  • Reel mechanism failure
  • Hopper mechanism failure
  • Button and switch failure

The warranty does not cover cosmetic damage, physical abuse, liquid damage, unauthorized modifications, or consumable items (lamps, batteries, cleaning supplies, printer paper). It also does not cover failures caused by improper electrical supply (surge damage from not using a surge protector, for example).

Warranty service works like this: Call us, describe the problem. We diagnose over the phone. If it is a parts issue, we ship the replacement part at no charge with instructions for installation. If you are not comfortable installing it yourself, we can arrange a local tech visit or accept the machine back for repair (customer pays shipping to us, we pay return shipping).

After the one-year warranty expires, our tech support remains free for life. We will still diagnose problems over the phone, help you identify parts, and walk you through repairs. You just pay for the parts themselves and any shipping.

Preventive Maintenance: Keep Parts From Failing

The best parts strategy is preventing failures in the first place:

  • Clean the bill acceptor every 1-3 months (cleaning cards cost $2 each)
  • Replace the CMOS battery every 5 years proactively (do not wait for failure)
  • Use a quality surge protector to prevent power supply damage from electrical spikes
  • Keep the machine in a climate-controlled environment (humidity and temperature extremes kill electronics)
  • Vacuum the ventilation openings every few months (dust buildup causes overheating)
  • Exercise the machine regularly (components that sit unused degrade faster than ones that run periodically)

A slot machine that gets basic preventive maintenance will run for decades without major repair. We have customers still playing machines they bought from us 15 or 20 years ago with nothing more than a battery swap and occasional cleaning. These are robust commercial devices built to run 24 hours a day in a casino. In a home environment with proper care, they last essentially forever.
